Difference between power battery and energy storage battery

There are significant differences between power batteries and energy storage batteries in a number of aspects, the following is a detailed comparison of the two:


I. Usage

Power battery: mainly used to drive cars, motorbikes and other vehicles to provide power for the vehicle. Power battery is one of the core components of new energy vehicles, and its performance directly affects the range and driving experience of the vehicle.


Energy storage battery: mainly used for storing electricity, playing an important role in the power system peak and valley adjustment, emergency backup power, distributed energy and other fields. Energy storage batteries help balance the load on the power grid and improve the stability and reliability of the power system.


2.The performance requirements

Power battery: It needs to have high energy density, cycle life and safety. High energy density means that in the limited weight and volume, the battery is able to store more power, thereby increasing the range of the vehicle. Cycle life determines the durability of the battery during use. Safety is a top priority for power batteries, which must be safe to use in all environments.


Energy storage batteries: also need to have good charging and discharging efficiency, cycle life and stability. However, compared with power batteries, energy storage batteries have relatively low energy density requirements and higher requirements for charge/discharge efficiency and stability. This is because the energy storage battery needs to maintain a stable power output over a long period of time to cope with the various needs of the power system.


3.Charging method

Power Battery: Usually adopts fast charging method to adapt to the demand for electricity in the process of vehicle travelling. Fast charging can supplement a large amount of power for the battery in a short period of time, thus extending the driving time of the vehicle.


Energy storage batteries: slow charging or float charging can be used. Slow charging helps to extend the service life of the battery and reduce battery loss. Float charging is a way to keep the battery in a near-full state of charging, suitable for energy storage batteries that need to be backed up for a long time.


4.Operating temperature range

Power battery: It needs to work normally in a wide range of temperatures to adapt to different usage environments. For example, in cold winter and hot summer, the power battery can maintain stable performance output.


Energy storage batteries: on the other hand, they usually work under more stable temperature conditions. This is because energy storage batteries are mainly used in electric power systems, and their working environment is relatively fixed, with a smaller range of temperature variation. Therefore, the energy storage battery temperature adaptability requirements are relatively low.


5. Volume and Capacity

Power battery: the volume of a battery is usually relatively small, but in order to meet the demand for vehicle range, power batteries usually need to have a high energy density and capacity.


Energy storage batteries: generally composed of multiple battery modules to form a large module, and then combined by many large modules, in the charging and discharging of the current sensor precision requirements as well as product volume requirements are relatively high. Therefore, the volume of the energy storage battery is usually larger to accommodate more battery modules and energy storage capacity.
